One could say that Mozart’s clarinet quintet “started it all” as far as the use of the instrument in the classical repertoire goes. Never before had a composer shown the full musical possibilities of the clarinet, its mellow and gentle sound and its groovy character.
Debussy’s only string quartet is also a very unique piece, written when the composer was only thirty-one. It shows vividly the intention of Debussy to move away from traditional harmonic rules.
The Solem Quartet, praised for their “immaculate precision and spirit” (The Strad) and “cultured tone” (Arts Desk), are joined by Anthony Friend, a leading soloist and internationally acclaimed clarinettist who’s also a key contributor to London’s classical music scene.
