The Fidelio Orchestra continues its collaboration with pianist Cedric Tiberghien taking on a rarely heard piece for piano and orchestra that the young and fierceness Strauss wrote in his early twenties. The work is considered by many to be among the most fiendish ones in the repertoire for piano and orchestra, but also showcases Strauss’s ability to use the piano as an orchestral instrument in ways that few others have ever attempted.
Tchaikovsky’s sixth symphony, often referred to as Pathetique, was premiered only nine days before the composer’s death. Although it is often thought of as a cry of despair from a dying man, it is in fact unlikely that Tchaikovsky knew anything about his fate when he published it in August 1893. Its structure is very peculiar in that it defies the usual organisation of movements that was typical of symphonies written throughout the Romantic period: it finishes with a slow movement coming after a boisterous Allegro.
