Brahms and Mahler Piano Quartets
February 13, 2023 6:30 PM
One hour concert followed by three-course menu. Doors open at 6:00pm for concert start at 6:30pm.
“The cover of this quartet should show a man pointing a gun to his head”, so Johannes Brahms wrote to his publisher when presenting his C minor piano quartet. Yet it’s not only suicidal drive which comes out of this piece, which has still earned the reputation as the Werther quartet, from Goethe’s character. The Andante possibly ranks among the most luscious and sensual melodies that Brahms ever wrote.
A juxtaposition of dramatic intensity and lyricism also underpins the single movement quartet that Gustav Mahler wrote as a music student, looking up at Brahms as a contemporary giant, although never really embracing his style nor his views.
For this programme of intense yet very direct music, Sini Simonen (Castalian String Quartet), Helene Clement (Doric String Quartet), Tim Posner and Kivali Dörken join forces for their first appearance together at the Fidelio Cafe.
