January 19, 2023 6:30 PM

One hour concert followed by three-course dinner. Doors open at 6:00, concert starts at 6:30pm.

This program is an exploration of how the viola developed a role as a solo instrument, through the pioneering efforts of the great violist Lionel Tertis who inspired so many of the composers of his day to write for the instrument as well as young performers to take up the viola. He was the first ever viola professor at the Royal Academy of Music. This programme begins with WH Reed who was a close friend of Elgar and assisted Elgar in the writing of his great violin concerto. Forsyth Chanson Celtique is a charming piece which is based on an old Irish Air and becomes rather impassioned in the middle section. Vaughan Williams is of course a much more familiar name, though his output for viola is largely forgotten. It includes two large works for Viola and Orchestra as well as some smaller pieces with Piano. The final piece of the programme is Rebecca Clarke’s Viola Sonata, which has become a favourite amongst violists. She was a student of Lionel Tertis and an accomplished violist but is largely remembered for her compositions.
